JUDr. Ivana Janu



She was born on 14 March 1946. She is married and has one daughter.
In 1972 she graduated from the Faculty of Law, Charles University in Prague, and in 1974 she earned a doctorate in public international law.
In 1973-1983 she worked at the research Institute for Hydroeconomy in the field of hydroeconomic legislation and legislation concerning the environment. In 1983-1989 she worked as a leading company lawyer at a construction company.
After the political changes in November, 1989, she was one of those selected to replace certain communist deputies in the Czech National Council. She later stood as a candidate and was twice elected to Parliament. During her terms of office, she worked on the Constitutional Legal Committee, the Mandate and Immunity Committee, and in 1992 became Vice Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee. She worked on drafting the constitution of the Czech Republic as a member of the parliamentary commission. In 1992 she was selected by the Parliament to head its delegation to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, where she worked on the Political and Legal Committee.
In 1991 she took part in a two-month study program at the invitation of the US Congress. The program concerned the democratic and constitutional system of the US.
In the summer of 1996, she was a Visiting Professor at the Law School of Capital University in Ohio, where she lectured on issues relating to the transformation in Central and Eastern Europe currently underway, with emphasis on comparative constitutional reform.
In June 2001 was elected by General Assembly of United Nations Judge ad litem af the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) sworn as Judge on 3rd September, 2001. After three years on 1st September, 2004 her mandate expired.
She served on two cases: Mitar Vasiljevic v. ProsecutorI T-98-32-T and Radoslav Brdjanin v. Prosecutor I T-99-36-T.
On 16th September, 2004 after Senath of the Czech Parliament contented with her nomination was sworn again as Judge of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic for a Mandate of 10 years´ duration.
